Before you hit the gas to set goals and targets in 2021, can you step on the brake first? And give yourself time to pause and reflect? After all, you are only human. You get tired, you get weak, and sometimes, you doubt yourself and feel insecure. Those feelings are all valid, especially in this time of pandemic.

Learn to take care of yourself so you can properly lead and nurture your business. Remember, you cannot give what you don’t have. Here are some practical self-care tips to take care of yourself.

1. Have some quiet time

Being a business owner takes a different level of hustle and grind. You’ll never know what tomorrow will bring. And if you don’t set a quiet time for yourself, it can be detrimental to your physical and mental health or else lead to burnout.

According to a study of Harvard Business Review, entrepreneurs who are extremely passionate about their business are most likely to experience burnout. They feel that work is emotionally draining which causes them to get stressed and frustrated.

Set at least 5 to 10 minutes of your day to pause and reflect. You can meditate to clear your mind or write down the things that you are grateful for. Try this every morning at least for a week and see the difference

2. Move your body

Get your body into the groove; exercise! You can also start by walking in the nearby park or have a 20-minute jog.

Virgin Group founder Richard Branson starts his day by exercising. “Exercise and family time put me in a great mind frame before getting down to business,” he shares in his blog.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg also emphasized the importance of staying fit. “Doing anything well requires energy. I make sure I work out at least three times a week – usually the first think when I wake up,” he explains in a Q&A session on Facebook.

3. Set time for personal reflection

Personal reflection allows you to step back and examine yourself. It gives you much awareness and gives you the opportunity to take a look at your daily actions and responses.

What went wrong? What are the things you need to improve? Where are you now at when it comes to your dreams? Ask yourself, contemplate, and discover the realizations you need to keep going.

In a Harvard Business School research titled ‘Making Experience Count: The Role of Reflection in Individual Learning,’ it shows that employees who spent 15 minutes for personal reflection performed 23% better after 10 days compared to those who did not set time for personal reflection.

Incorporating these three practical self-care tips can bring significant changes to your day. It may not be part of your daily routine yet, but don’t worry, it’s not yet too late to build a good habit that can benefit your wellness in a long run.

Remember, it takes 21 days to build a habit. Start small and start today!
